South African drama series The Polygamist has become one of Netflix’s biggest global success stories, racking up more than 159 million viewing hours in less than a month.
The locally produced series has attracted over 16.5 million views since its debut on 12 June 2026, making it the 58th most-watched series on Netflix worldwide this year.
Based on the bestselling novel by Zimbabwean-born, South Africa-based author Sue Nyathi, The Polygamist explores the emotional, financial and personal consequences of secret polygamous relationships. The story was inspired by Nyathi’s observations of men leading double lives, as well as her own family’s experiences with traditional polygamy.
The 22-episode drama quickly became a social media sensation, climbing to No. 2 on Netflix’s global charts, reaching No. 1 in 16 countries, and breaking into the Top 10 in 63 countries, including the United States.
One of the show’s standout performances came from Sdumo Mtshali, whose portrayal of the morally complex Jonasi Gomora has sparked widespread discussion among viewers online.
Netflix highlighted the series’ success in its latest global engagement report, which revealed subscribers watched more than 97 billion hours of content during the first half of 2026. The streaming giant also celebrated South Africa’s growing influence on the platform, with thriller 180 emerging as one of its most-watched films worldwide.
The success of The Polygamist marks another milestone for South African storytelling, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as a producer of world-class content with global appeal.
