Aston Villa have completed the signing of Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea on a season-long loan, with the agreement including a conditional obligation to make the move permanent.
The 21-year-old arrives at Villa Park less than a year after joining Chelsea from Manchester United in a £40 million transfer. Reports suggest the overall package meets Chelsea’s valuation of approximately £42.6 million, while Manchester United could receive around £260,000 through a 10% sell-on clause if the transfer becomes permanent.
The deal follows another major piece of business between the two Premier League clubs, with Morgan Rogers recently making a British-record £117 million move from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
Villa manager Unai Emery welcomed Garnacho’s arrival, describing him as an exciting addition to the squad.
“We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy,” Emery said.
Garnacho will wear the No. 17 shirt, the same number he previously wore at Manchester United and with the Argentina national team.
The move has attracted attention because of its unique structure. Both Aston Villa and Chelsea have recently been fined by UEFA for breaching financial sustainability regulations, making player transfers more complex.
Rather than completing an immediate permanent transfer, the clubs agreed on a loan deal with conditions that could trigger a permanent move. This approach helps both clubs manage financial regulations while still allowing Villa to strengthen its squad.
UEFA has introduced stricter rules around player exchange deals, meaning clubs must carefully structure transfers to avoid having opposite-direction deals treated as a single transaction for accounting purposes.
After struggling for regular opportunities at Chelsea, Garnacho believes Aston Villa offers the perfect environment to rediscover his best form.
According to Sky Sports, the winger said he was looking for a club that could restore his confidence after completing the move. “I was looking for a club where I could regain confidence and become the player I was during my first years at Manchester United.”
He added that conversations with Emery played a major role in his decision. “I spoke with the manager before coming here, and he gave me confidence. Playing Champions League football is important, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to join Aston Villa.”
Villa will be hoping Garnacho’s pace, creativity and attacking flair can strengthen their squad as they prepare to compete in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League during the 2026/27 season.
