SAA Pilot Fights To Save Her Career After Turbulence Incident

A veteran South African Airways (SAA) pilot is fighting to protect her career after being blamed for a turbulence incident that injured cabin crew members during a flight from Cape Town to OR Tambo International Airport in October 2024.

Captain Yvette Walsh, who has 23 years of flying experience, has approached the High Court seeking an independent investigation into the incident involving an Airbus A330-300. The dispute has raised questions about flight safety, accountability and whether the pilot has been given a fair opportunity to challenge the findings against her.

During the flight, the aircraft experienced turbulence that caused instability. Walsh and the flight’s captain, Craig Pearce, initially believed severe weather conditions were responsible for the aircraft’s unusual up-and-down movements, known as “porpoising”.

However, subsequent reviews by Airbus and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) reportedly concluded that Walsh’s manual control inputs contributed to the aircraft’s unstable flight path. The findings placed her under scrutiny, and she was grounded while further processes continued.

Walsh argues that important evidence, including cockpit voice recordings and flight data recordings, was not preserved, making it difficult for her to independently examine what happened. She maintains that she has not been given a fair opportunity to challenge the conclusions that could have serious consequences for her professional future.

SAA is opposing her application, arguing that an independent investigation is unnecessary and that the matter does not present an ongoing aircraft safety concern. The court has removed the case from the urgent roll, meaning it will proceed through the ordinary High Court process.

The outcome could have a significant impact on Walsh’s future in aviation. The case also highlights the importance of preserving flight data, conducting fair investigations and ensuring that aviation safety concerns are properly addressed.

As the legal battle continues, Walsh’s future in the cockpit remains uncertain.
