More Than 100 Rhodes University Students Fall Ill As Gastrointestinal Outbreak Sparks Investigation

Rhodes University is investigating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak affecting more than 100 students in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, as health authorities work to establish the cause and prevent further infections.

More than 100 students at Rhodes University have reportedly fallen ill with gastrointestinal symptoms, raising concerns about the health and safety of the university community. The outbreak was confirmed on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, with the institution working alongside local public health authorities and environmental health practitioners to investigate the source of the illnesses.

According to reports published on 21 October, the university had recorded just over 100 cases among students. Similar illnesses have also been reported elsewhere in Makhanda, suggesting that the situation may extend beyond the university campus. However, the exact cause of the outbreak has not yet been confirmed.

Water Quality And Food Safety Under Investigation

As part of its response, Rhodes University has introduced urgent water-quality testing at student residences, ensured the provision of safe drinking water in dining halls and strengthened precautions during food preparation.

The university is monitoring reported cases and coordinating medical support for affected students. Although contaminated food or water are possible sources of gastrointestinal illness, authorities have not established whether either is responsible for the current outbreak. Investigations are continuing to determine whether the cases share a common source.

The development has also raised wider concerns about public health in Makhanda, where residents have previously experienced water-quality challenges. However, no direct link between the current outbreak and the town’s water supply has been officially confirmed.

Students Urged To Take Precautions

The university has urged students and staff to follow strict food-safety and hygiene practices both on and off campus. These include drinking bottled water or water that has been boiled and cooled, using safe water when preparing food and brushing teeth, avoiding ice and uncooked food washed with untreated water, and washing hands regularly with soap and water.

Common gastrointestinal symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and fever. People experiencing these symptoms are advised to drink safe fluids to prevent dehydration and seek medical advice. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms should obtain urgent medical attention.

Students requiring assistance can contact the Rhodes University Health Care Centre on 046 603 8523 during the day. For after-hours emergencies, the university has provided the ER24 contact number 010 205 3068. Students should also notify their residence warden or sub-warden when they become ill.

Investigation Continues

Rhodes University has stated that it takes the health and well-being of its community seriously and is working to respond to the situation. Further updates are expected as verified information becomes available.

For now, the priority remains identifying the cause of the illnesses, supporting affected students and reducing the risk of additional cases. Students and staff are encouraged to follow official university guidance while investigations continue.
