South Africans are being urged to remain alert as severe weather conditions are expected in several parts of the country on Monday, 26 October 2026. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning, with possible flooding and damage to infrastructure in affected areas.
According to the latest forecasts, KwaZulu-Natal and the extreme northern parts of the Eastern Cape face a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms. These conditions could lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, damage to homes and infrastructure, and dangerous driving conditions. The warning excludes the extreme north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
KwaZulu-Natal And Durban On Alert
Residents in KwaZulu-Natal, including eThekwini and surrounding areas, have been urged to take precautions as thunderstorms could bring heavy rainfall, strong winds and hail. The municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services have been placed on alert to respond to weather-related incidents.
Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance and avoid roads affected by flooding. Residents living in low-lying areas and informal settlements are also encouraged to monitor weather updates and take precautions if conditions deteriorate.
Damaging Winds And Fire Risks In Other Provinces
The weather warning extends beyond the eastern parts of the country. A Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds covers the western Free State and the extreme eastern Northern Cape. Strong winds, falling trees and dust storms could disrupt transport routes, damage settlements and affect agricultural activities.
Meanwhile, extremely high fire danger has been forecast for parts of the North West, Northern Cape, Free State, Limpopo and western KwaZulu-Natal. Residents in these areas are urged to exercise caution, particularly when dealing with open flames or activities that could start veld fires.
