Chery Unveils Affordable Electric Q Hatchback for South Africa

Chery is expanding South Africa’s electric vehicle market with the launch of its new Q hatchback, arriving in early September with prices starting at R350,000.

The five-door electric hatchback is powered by a 90kW electric motor and a 42.7kWh battery, delivering an estimated driving range of up to 340km on the WLTP cycle. Chery says the Q can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 9.1 seconds, making it a practical option for everyday commuting.

The new model will compete directly with budget-friendly EVs such as the BYD Dolphin Surf, Dongfeng Box and Geely E2.

One of the Q’s standout features is its spacious cabin. Thanks to its long 2,700mm wheelbase, the hatchback offers generous passenger room, while the boot provides 375 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1,450 litres with the rear seats folded. A 70-litre front trunk adds extra storage for smaller items.

Inside, drivers get an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a column-mounted gear selector that creates additional storage space in the centre console.

The range-topping Elite model, priced at R400,000, adds 17-inch alloy wheels, advanced driver-assistance features and an automatic parking system.

Customers who pre-order the Chery Q will also receive a package that includes a seven-year/150,000km warranty, a home charging wall box, portable charging equipment and the choice of either a charging credit or a discount on the vehicle purchase price.
