Primedia Broadcasting is taking its digital listening experience into the car, with Primedia+ now integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The move gives listeners easier access to some of South Africa’s biggest radio brands directly through compatible vehicle infotainment systems, including 702, 947, CapeTalk and Kfm 94.5.

The integration marks another step in Primedia Broadcasting’s shift towards a digital-first media offering, allowing audiences to access live radio, podcasts, interviews and other on-demand content without being restricted by traditional broadcast coverage.

Through Primedia+, listeners can stream their favourite stations in digital quality while accessing additional content through a single platform.

For CapeTalk, the development is particularly significant. While the station’s AM broadcast signal has geographical limitations, its presence on Primedia+ allows listeners to access the station wherever compatible internet-connected systems are available.

CapeTalk Station Manager and Head of Digital Content Tessa van Staden said the integration removes some of the barriers associated with listening to digital radio while driving.

“By integrating with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, CapeTalk is now directly accessible on the dashboard of any compatible vehicle,” she said.

The platform is designed to reduce the need for drivers to interact with their smartphones, offering a more seamless, hands-free listening experience.

Primedia+ offers more than live broadcasts. Users can also explore podcasts, on-demand interviews and other multimedia content from across the Primedia Broadcasting portfolio.

Primedia Broadcasting Chief Commercial Officer Kelvin Storie said integrating the platform with vehicle infotainment systems reflects the changing way audiences consume media.

“Integration is the future of media engagement,” Storie said.

He added that Primedia+ is designed to give audiences greater control and convenience while allowing the broadcaster to develop more meaningful digital connections with listeners.

The platform also provides improved digital audio quality and an interface designed for hands-free use, giving drivers access to news, entertainment, conversations and storytelling throughout their journeys.

The CarPlay and Android Auto integration forms part of Primedia Broadcasting’s wider digital transformation strategy.

According to Storie, the company is focused on putting listener convenience and accessibility at the centre of its offering while using technology and audience data to strengthen engagement.

The development also signals how traditional radio companies are increasingly moving beyond terrestrial broadcasting to meet audiences across multiple digital platforms.

For Primedia, the next phase will involve further developments across Primedia+, with the company signalling that more digital innovations are on the way.
