American neo-soul and R&B artist MALIA is turning her unexpected South African following into a new chapter with the release of her latest single, “Touch.”
The artist has built a strong audience in South Africa without ever performing in the country, with Johannesburg emerging as one of her top streaming cities worldwide. Her growing local fanbase has now prompted MALIA to formally introduce herself to South African listeners through her latest release.
“I’m honestly so grateful that South Africa discovered my music before I even had the chance to come there,” MALIA says. “It means so much to know that people connected with my music organically and made space for it in their lives.”
MALIA’s rise in South Africa comes as R&B and neo-soul continue to find a strong audience locally. Spotify data cited by the artist shows that South Africans streamed more than 8.5 billion minutes of R&B during 2025, highlighting the country’s growing appetite for the genre.
MALIA has reportedly gained around 70,000 TikTok followers from South Africa in just a few months, while her catalogue has surpassed 100 million global streams. She currently attracts more than 500,000 monthly Spotify listeners.
Her organic growth has been particularly notable given that she has yet to perform in the country.
“Touch” explores the anticipation and vulnerability that come with two people discovering a connection.
Built around understated production and MALIA’s soulful vocals, the track captures the feeling of allowing attraction to develop naturally rather than rushing the moment.
“‘Touch’ is about that feeling of being drawn to someone and allowing yourself to explore that connection,” she explains. “There’s curiosity, chemistry and a desire to take your time with someone.”
The single follows the release of her latest album, If I’m Being Honest, which arrived on 3 July 2026 and explores themes including love, boundaries, self-discovery and personal growth.
MALIA has already built an impressive international résumé. She was personally selected by Alicia Keys to record a commemorative cover marking the 20th anniversary of Songs In A Minor, with the recording later featured on Keys’ Spotify profile.
She has also toured with Corinne Bailey Rae and JMSN, opened for Syd, and is an artist affiliated with Fender and Martin Guitar.
Originally from the Pacific Northwest in the United States, MALIA has developed a distinctive sound that blends neo-soul, alternative R&B and intimate songwriting.
