For years, cellulite treatments have focused on improving the appearance of dimpling through creams, massage and aesthetic procedures. Now, new research is exploring whether the condition could be better understood by looking beneath the skin.

Research led by Italian professor Pasquale Motolese has examined the role of the extracellular matrix — the structural network surrounding cells — in the biological processes associated with cellulite. This research has helped inform the development of Alidya, an injectable treatment designed to target these processes rather than simply addressing the appearance of skin dimpling.

Understanding Cellulite

According to Motolese’s research, several processes may contribute to the development of cellulite.

Changes in microcirculation can affect oxygen delivery and the removal of metabolic by-products. This may contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation in surrounding tissue, while changes in connective tissue can influence how fat compartments interact with the skin.

Together, these processes can contribute to the uneven texture commonly associated with cellulite.

How Alidya Works

Alidya is administered through a series of small injections, using a technique known as mesotherapy.

Its formulation includes chelating agents designed to bind certain metal ions, alongside calcium ascorbate, an antioxidant. The treatment also contains amino acids including methionine, glycine and isoleucine, which are intended to support processes involved in connective-tissue health.

The treatment is designed to work within deeper tissue rather than simply targeting the visible surface appearance.

What Does the Research Show?

Early clinical research has produced promising findings, although the evidence base is still developing.

One recent study involving 24 women assessed a programme of six weekly Alidya treatments. Researchers reported structural changes measured using high-frequency ultrasound, including reductions in subcutaneous tissue thickness and improvements in the appearance of fat protrusions associated with dimpling.

The study also reported changes in thigh circumference and BMI. However, the small sample size means larger and longer-term studies are needed to establish how consistently the treatment works.

Alidya is primarily marketed for areas such as the thighs and buttocks and is generally aimed at mild to moderate cellulite.
