Lithium Africa Targets 2027 Production At Northern Cape Project

TSX-V-listed Lithium Africa is moving ahead with plans to develop its Springbok lithium project in South Africa’s Northern Cape, with first spodumene concentrate production targeted for the second half of 2027.

The company had initially considered selling previously mined pegmatite from the Norrabees I mine as direct shipping ore. It has now opted to process the existing stockpile together with newly mined material through an on-site dense media separation (DMS) plant.

The decision follows successful testing of a 13-tonne bulk sample, with the company now working to secure the additional approvals needed to construct the plant. Mining at Norrabees I is already covered by the project’s existing mining permit.

Early drilling has also produced encouraging lithium results. Highlights include 7.5 metres at 1.97% lithium oxide (Li₂O), including a 6-metre section grading 2.27% Li₂O, as well as 4 metres at 2.25% Li₂O.

Lithium Africa is targeting an initial mineral resource estimate in the first half of 2027, followed by a preliminary economic assessment.

The company is also in preliminary discussions with potential funding partners, including through offtake agreements, vendor financing and project-level equity. A financing decision is targeted for the first half of 2027.

CEO Thomas Benson said the company believes Springbok could be among the few lithium projects capable of reaching production in 2027, while generating cash flow to support further exploration in the Northern Cape and across its African portfolio.
