MultiChoice is strengthening its support for South Africa’s creative industry at the 17th Durban FilmMart, taking place from 9 to 12 October, with a focus on partnerships, funding, skills development and protecting local intellectual property.
The company, which has invested in African storytelling for more than three decades, says the industry needs stronger support as global production faces ongoing challenges.
MultiChoice CEO Willington Ngwepe said a sustainable local content industry requires investment alongside an ecosystem that helps producers build businesses, supports women into leadership and creates opportunities for emerging talent.
The company will use its participation at Durban FilmMart to engage with independent producers, filmmakers, policymakers, distributors and other industry stakeholders.

Intellectual property protection will also be a key focus. Through its work with Partners Against Piracy, MultiChoice supports public education around the impact of piracy, while working with authorities and law enforcement to strengthen protections for creative content.
Durban FilmMart Director Magdalene Reddy welcomed MultiChoice’s involvement, saying its long-standing investment in African storytelling could help connect filmmakers with important funding and production opportunities.
MultiChoice Head of Content Renee Jacobs and CANAL+ Africa Head of Scripted Content Tebogo Matlawa will lead a discussion on “Support and Funding of Local Content in SA” on 9 October.
Durban FilmMart 2026 will be held at the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani on Durban’s beachfront.
