Africa’s digital transformation is gaining momentum as more people gain access to mobile networks and use the internet on a daily basis.
According to the GSMA, 83% of connected Africans now go online every day, reflecting the growing importance of mobile technology across the continent.
The mobile coverage gap has also fallen sharply, from 50% in 2016 to less than 15% today. The decline has been driven by continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure and network expansion.
Greater connectivity is creating new opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs and consumers, particularly as digital services become increasingly important to everyday economic activity.
However, expanding access is only part of the challenge. Africa will also need to ensure that people and businesses can afford devices, data and digital services while developing the skills needed to participate fully in the digital economy.
With the connectivity gap continuing to shrink, the next major challenge will be turning Africa’s expanding digital access into stronger economic opportunities.
