Pick n Pay And Boxer Expand As Retail Giants Target More Shoppers

South African retail group Pick n Pay is pushing ahead with its growth strategy, with Boxer leading the expansion through new store openings aimed at reaching more customers and strengthening its position in the competitive grocery market.

Boxer plans to open 25 new supermarkets and 35 liquor stores during the 2027 financial year, according to recent reports. The discount retailer opened 19 stores during the first 20 weeks of the financial year, reflecting its continued focus on affordable shopping and expanding its footprint.

Pick n Pay is also planning to open new stores as it works to improve its financial performance following a period of closing underperforming outlets and converting selected stores to the Boxer brand. The group has identified expansion, better pricing and improved customer service as key parts of its recovery strategy.

The expansion could create employment opportunities and improve access to groceries for communities, while increasing competition among retailers. However, the group must continue balancing growth with the financial pressures facing consumers and the need to keep prices competitive.

As Pick n Pay strengthens its core business and Boxer continues growing, the coming months will be important in determining how successfully the retail group can attract customers and build sustainable growth.
