Three men arrested following anti-immigration protests in Durban have appeared in court as authorities investigate violent unrest that left vehicles burnt and businesses damaged across the city.
The accused have been identified as Sphelele “Magolide” Shinga, Malizo Dzanibe and Wandile Nsibande. They were arrested on Saturday, 10 October 2026, amid demonstrations linked to the March and March movement and growing tensions surrounding South Africa’s asylum application process.
The protests turned violent in parts of Durban’s central business district, with reports of vehicles being set alight, shops damaged and businesses looted. Police have been investigating incidents linked to public violence and property damage, while authorities have urged demonstrators to express their concerns peacefully.
The three men face charges relating to the protests, although the specific charges differ between the accused. During their court appearance on 12 October, Shinga and Dzanibe were granted bail, while Nsibande remained in custody pending further proceedings.
The court also imposed conditions aimed at preventing further violence and intimidation. The cases come as authorities work to restore order and address tensions surrounding immigration and the processing of asylum applications.
The proceedings are ongoing, and the allegations against the accused have yet to be determined by the court.
