Game Stores Face More Closures In South Africa As Walmart Expands

South Africa’s retail sector is undergoing a major change as Game, one of the country’s well-known discount retailers, continues to reduce its store network. The latest developments have raised concerns among shoppers and employees about the future of the brand.

According to reports published in October 2026, Game’s South African footprint has declined to 96 stores, compared with around 150 in 2019. The company has also been reviewing additional branches for closure or possible conversion into Walmart stores. In February 2026, its parent company, Massmart, confirmed that it was considering closing approximately 20 stores, subject to consultations with affected employees.

One of the main reasons behind the closures is the financial pressure on underperforming stores, alongside changing shopping habits as more consumers turn to online shopping. The expansion of Walmart-branded stores in South Africa is also part of the wider strategy to reshape the retail group’s operations. Walmart has already opened outlets at locations previously occupied by Game.

The changes could have a significant impact on employees who may face retrenchment, as well as communities that rely on nearby Game stores for affordable household goods, electronics and other essential products. However, some affected locations may reopen under the Walmart brand, meaning that not every closure will result in the permanent loss of a retail outlet.

Despite the ongoing changes, Massmart has stressed that the reduction in Game stores does not mean the complete end of the brand in South Africa. The company continues to invest in its remaining stores while adapting to competition and changing consumer needs.

As the retail landscape evolves, shoppers and employees will be watching closely to see which branches remain open and how Walmart’s expansion will shape the future of Game in the country.
