Kwagga Smith Parts Ways With Japanese Club After Eight Successful Years

South African rugby star Kwagga Smith has ended his eight-year spell with Japan’s Shizuoka Blue Revs, opening the door to a possible return to South African rugby.

Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith has officially parted ways with Japanese rugby club Shizuoka Blue Revs after the two parties agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent. The announcement was made on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, bringing an end to a successful chapter in the 33-year-old’s career.

Smith joined the club, previously known as Yamaha Júbilo, in 2018 and quickly established himself as one of the team’s most influential players. During his time in Japan, he made 78 appearances in the club’s domestic competitions, earned five Team of the Season selections and was named Japan Rugby League One Player of the Season for the 2022–23 campaign.

The club praised Smith for his leadership, experience and contribution to its development, describing him as an important figure in its history. The double Rugby World Cup winner also brought considerable international experience to the team, having earned 63 Test caps for South Africa.

Bulls Linked With Potential Signing

Smith’s departure has sparked speculation about a possible return to South Africa, with the Vodacom Bulls reportedly interested in securing his services. Bulls coach Johan Ackermann previously confirmed that the Pretoria-based franchise was considering signing Smith, as well as fellow Springbok star Malcolm Marx.

A move to the Bulls would bring Smith back into South African domestic rugby and potentially reunite him with Ackermann, under whom he previously played at the Lions. However, no official agreement confirming Smith’s next destination has been announced, meaning his future remains uncertain.

Injury Recovery Remains Important

Smith’s next career move also comes as he continues to deal with a knee injury that has kept him out of the Springboks’ international campaign. His recovery will be an important factor as he looks towards the next stage of his professional career.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Smith leaves Japan with an impressive record and a reputation as one of the competition’s standout players. His departure marks the end of a significant period for both the player and the Blue Revs, while South African rugby supporters will be watching closely to see whether he returns home.
