Marvel Studios has officially revealed the next hero set to carry Wakanda’s legacy. Rising British actor David Jonsson has been cast as Prince T’Challa II in Black Panther 3, marking a major new chapter for the blockbuster superhero franchise.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where fans were introduced to the actor who will portray the son of the late King T’Challa.
Returning star Letitia Wright expressed her excitement following the announcement, saying Jonsson’s casting is especially meaningful because of their friendship.
Wright shared that she has known the actor personally and is thrilled to see him take on such an iconic role. She also joked that she’ll enjoy mentoring—and teasing—her new co-star as the story unfolds.
Her character, Shuri, is expected to continue her journey after becoming the Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while guiding the next generation of Wakandan leadership.
According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, director Ryan Coogler identified Jonsson as the perfect successor long before an official casting search began.
After watching Jonsson’s recent performances, Coogler reportedly arranged a private meeting with the actor. Feige recalled the director leaving the meeting convinced that Jonsson was the right person to continue the Black Panther legacy, prompting Marvel to move forward with the casting.
The upcoming film will focus on Prince T’Challa II, the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia, as he embraces his destiny as Wakanda’s newest protector.
Before audiences see that story unfold, Wright will reprise her role as Shuri in the next Avengers film, where Marvel says viewers will see the character fully embrace her responsibilities as both Black Panther and one of the franchise’s key leaders.
The original Black Panther became a global phenomenon, earning more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and making history as the first superhero film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
Jonsson now steps into one of Marvel’s most celebrated roles, following the unforgettable legacy of Chadwick Boseman, whose portrayal of King T’Challa inspired audiences around the world.
Following the announcement, Jonsson thanked Marvel Studios, Coogler and the cast for welcoming him into the franchise, describing the opportunity as both an honour and a privilege. The actor said he hopes audiences will discover his performance when Black Panther 3 arrives in cinemas on December 15, 2028.
