Google is stepping up its efforts to close the gap with AI rivals as pressure mounts on its Gemini model.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has reportedly urged key AI staff to move faster, as competitors such as Anthropic and OpenAI continue to make gains.
The renewed push comes alongside a major shake-up at Google DeepMind. Demis Hassabis has moved into a chairman role, while his deputy, Koray Kavukcuoglu, has taken greater control of the division and Gemini’s development.
Commercial Pressure Grows
The restructuring signals a stronger focus on turning Google’s AI investments into commercial opportunities, including integrating Gemini more deeply across the company’s products.
Several teams are also reportedly moving from DeepMind into Google’s corporate structure, raising concerns among employees about the AI lab’s independence.
Google has faced challenges including limited computing capacity, internal disagreements and slower development cycles compared with more agile competitors.
Brin Pushes for a Comeback
Although Brin no longer holds an executive position, sources say he has remained involved in AI development and has pushed teams to focus on areas such as AI self-improvement.
With Anthropic and OpenAI advancing rapidly, Google’s latest leadership changes show that the company is determined to remain a major force in the race for AI supremacy.
