Former Springbok centre Joggie Jansen, remembered as one of the most uncompromising defenders of his generation, has died at the age of 78.
Jansen passed away on Sunday morning after suffering a heart attack while visiting Otjiwarongo, Namibia.
Born in Griekwastad, Northern Cape, in 1948, Jansen earned 10 Test caps for South Africa between 1970 and 1972, scoring one try. He made his international debut against New Zealand at Loftus Versfeld in July 1970.
He became part of Springbok folklore during that series after producing a famous tackle on All Blacks flyhalf Wayne Cottrell, widely regarded as one of rugby’s most memorable hits.
Jansen also represented the Free State and was part of their 1976 Currie Cup-winning team. He played against France, Australia and England during his Test career and featured in five additional tour matches for South Africa.
SA Rugby president Mark Alexander paid tribute to Jansen, describing his death as a loss to the wider South African rugby family.
“Joggie Jansen was a proud Springbok who represented his country with the commitment and courage required to wear the green and gold jersey at Test level,” Alexander said.
He added that while Jansen’s famous tackle remains part of Springbok folklore, his contribution extended far beyond that single moment.
Jansen leaves behind a lasting legacy as a tough, committed defender who represented South Africa during an important era of Springbok rugby.
