FIFA Suspends Egypt Coach After Referee Criticism Following Argentina Defeat

Egypt’s national football team has been dealt a disciplinary setback after FIFA suspended head coach Hossam Hassan for three matches following comments criticising refereeing decisions during the team’s dramatic 3–2 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced the sanctions on Monday, 19 October 2026.

The decision also affects Egypt team director Ibrahim Hassan, the coach’s twin brother, who received a three-match suspension, while forward Mostafa Zico was handed a five-match ban over his post-match remarks about the referee. The sanctions followed disciplinary proceedings opened by FIFA in August.

Controversial World Cup Exit

The case stems from Egypt’s Round of 16 encounter against Argentina in July, when the Pharaohs surrendered a two-goal lead before losing 3–2. Egypt’s frustration centred on a disallowed goal by Zico and a late penalty appeal that was rejected as Argentina pushed for the winning goal.

Following the match, Hossam Hassan accused the officials of treating his side unfairly, arguing that key decisions had affected Egypt’s chances of reaching the quarter-finals. Zico also criticised the referee in a post-match interview, while Ibrahim Hassan made comments questioning the fairness of the result.

However, FIFA’s refereeing chief, Pierluigi Collina, defended the officials, explaining that video assistant referee (VAR) intervention was justified in overturning Zico’s goal because of a foul earlier in the attacking move. He also rejected suggestions that the match officials had favoured Argentina, warning that accusations questioning referees’ integrity could expose them and their families to threats.

Egypt Considers An Appeal

The Egyptian Football Association has requested detailed explanations from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee to understand the reasons behind the suspensions. The association says it will assess its legal options before deciding whether to appeal the decisions.

The bans could affect Egypt’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, including fixtures against Malawi in November. Zico faces a longer period on the sidelines, with reports indicating that his suspension could keep him out of action for the national team until June 2027.

The disciplinary action has placed Egypt’s coaching staff and players under renewed scrutiny as the team prepares for its next international commitments. The outcome of any appeal could determine whether the suspensions remain unchanged or are modified, leaving Egypt to plan its upcoming fixtures while the matter continues to develop.
