MultiChoice Cuts DStv Prices In Bid To Win Back Lost Subscribers

MultiChoice is stepping up efforts to win back subscribers by making DStv more affordable and restructuring its subscription packages as competition from streaming platforms continues to put pressure on traditional pay television.

The company, now owned by French media group Canal+, has been losing customers as households reconsider their entertainment spending amid rising living costs. The growing popularity of services such as Netflix and YouTube has also increased pressure on DStv to offer better value for money.

Lower Prices And Simplified Packages

As part of its turnaround strategy, MultiChoice has introduced more affordable subscription options in South Africa. In September 2026, the company revamped its DStv packages, reducing the entry cost for customers and adjusting the channel offerings across different tiers.

The new South African lineup includes Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series and Premium, with prices starting at R99 per month for the streaming version of Starter. The Premium package is available for R799 per month under a 24-month contract, offering customers a lower price in exchange for a longer commitment.

The company is also focusing on improving the value of its sports offering, recognising that live football and other major sporting competitions remain important reasons why many customers subscribe to DStv.

Can The Strategy Reverse Subscriber Losses?

MultiChoice hopes the changes will encourage former customers to return while helping existing subscribers find packages that better suit their budgets. However, the company faces a significant challenge as consumers increasingly favour flexible, on-demand entertainment services.

The success of the strategy will depend on whether lower prices, attractive content and improved customer value can persuade viewers to remain with or return to the platform.

For MultiChoice, the goal is clear: rebuild subscriber confidence and strengthen DStv’s position in an increasingly competitive entertainment market.
