The Oscar-winning actress reunites with familiar co-stars for the highly anticipated prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence is officially returning to the world of The Hunger Games, reprising her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The actress confirmed her return during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast on 28 October 2026, ending months of speculation among fans.
Lawrence, who helped make the franchise a global success, revealed that returning to the production was an emotional experience. She also confirmed the involvement of Josh Hutcherson, who played Peeta Mellark, and Woody Harrelson, who portrayed Haymitch Abernathy. Lawrence described reuniting with her former castmates and the familiar production crew as an unforgettable experience.
A New Chapter In The Hunger Games Story
Unlike the original films, which followed Katniss’s fight for survival and her role in the rebellion against the Capitol, Sunrise on the Reaping takes audiences back 24 years before those events. The story focuses on a young Haymitch Abernathy and his experience during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Actor Joseph Zada plays the younger Haymitch, whose journey through the brutal competition helps explain the character audiences came to know in the original films. The movie also features a star-studded cast, including Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Ralph Fiennes and Glenn Close.
Lawrence and Hutcherson’s return connects the new prequel to the original franchise. The story’s epilogue features the older versions of Katniss and Peeta, providing a natural link between Haymitch’s past and the characters’ later lives.
When Will The Film Be Released?
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 20 November 2026. The film is based on Suzanne Collins’s novel of the same name and is the latest instalment in a franchise that has generated billions of dollars at the global box office.
Lawrence previously expressed interest in revisiting Katniss, but her latest confirmation has increased excitement among fans who have waited more than a decade to see her return to the role. Her reunion with Hutcherson and Harrelson adds another layer of nostalgia to the upcoming release.
With its familiar characters, new storyline and acclaimed cast, the film is expected to attract both longtime fans and audiences discovering the world of Panem for the first time.
