George Russell Faces FIA Scrutiny As Mercedes Celebrates Kimi Antonelli’s Historic F1 Championship Victory

Mercedes driver George Russell found himself at the centre of controversy on Sunday, 1 November 2026, after failing to attend mandatory post-race media commitments following the Mexican Grand Prix. The incident came on a historic day for Mercedes, as teammate Kimi Antonelli secured the 2026 Formula One Drivers’ Championship.

Russell was summoned to the FIA stewards after leaving the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez without attending the required media interviews with broadcasters and journalists. Under Formula One regulations, drivers are expected to fulfil these commitments unless they receive an approved exemption.

The FIA subsequently fined Mercedes €5,000 (approximately R100,000) after determining that Russell had left the circuit without completing his media obligations. The punishment was imposed on the team rather than Russell personally.

The incident followed an already difficult afternoon for the British driver. Russell started the race from second position but dropped several places after experiencing an energy deployment problem at the start. His race became more complicated when he received a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. He eventually finished sixth.

Meanwhile, Antonelli celebrated a remarkable achievement by finishing third and becoming Formula One’s youngest-ever world champion at just 20 years old. His championship victory also brought an end to Russell’s hopes of securing the title this season.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later explained that Russell was deeply disappointed following the race and had been excused by the team from his media duties. Wolff described the situation as an extremely difficult moment for the British driver, particularly because he believed the car had the pace to win.

Despite his disappointment, Russell reportedly congratulated Antonelli and his family following the race, demonstrating sportsmanship during an emotional moment for the team.

The contrasting fortunes of the two Mercedes drivers made the Mexican Grand Prix an unforgettable weekend for the team, with Antonelli celebrating a historic championship while Russell faced disappointment and an FIA-related controversy.
