South African Motorists Set For November Fuel Price Relief As Temporary Levy Cuts Take Effect

South African motorists could finally receive some relief at the pumps in November, with petrol and diesel prices expected to decrease from Wednesday, 4 November 2026. The anticipated reductions follow the government’s announcement of temporary fuel levy cuts aimed at easing the rising cost of living.

According to the latest Central Energy Fund (CEF) data, petrol prices are projected to decrease by approximately 50 cents per litre for 95 unleaded and 93 cents for 93 unleaded. Diesel motorists could benefit from larger reductions of approximately R1.58 to R1.68 per litre, depending on the grade.

The relief follows Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s announcement of a R10 billion temporary fuel relief package. From 4 November until 1 December, the general fuel levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3.00 per litre for diesel.

However, the relief comes against a challenging international economic background. Rising global oil prices, tensions in the Middle East and a weaker rand have continued to place pressure on South Africa’s fuel costs. Without the government’s intervention, motorists could have faced further increases instead of the anticipated reductions.

The government has also indicated that the temporary relief will be adjusted in December, with petrol levy reductions changing to R1.00 per litre and diesel reductions to R1.50 per litre from 2 December until 5 January 2027.

Although November’s expected reductions will provide some breathing room for households, transport operators and businesses, motorists should not expect fuel prices to return to earlier levels following the significant increases experienced throughout the year.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is expected to confirm the final November adjustments ahead of their implementation on 4 November. Until then, motorists are encouraged to plan their fuel expenses carefully as the country awaits the official announcement.
