South African boxing champion Sivenathi “Special One” Nontshinga has been involved in a serious motor vehicle crash on Malibongwe Drive in Johannesburg.

Nontshinga’s management company, Asanda Empires, confirmed that its team is at the scene and is working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Manager Naledi Zibi said further information would be released once the team had gathered verified details and communicated with those affected.

“We will release details of what happened. We have just arrived at the scene, and we will share details on the crash. We still need to reach out and communicate with families,” Zibi said.

The management team has appealed for privacy and patience while the situation is assessed.

Nontshinga was preparing for another world-title opportunity

The incident comes as the Eastern Cape-born boxer prepares for a major international assignment.

Nontshinga is scheduled to travel overseas on 4 September ahead of an IBF world title eliminator against Filipino boxer Regie Suganob in the Philippines. Victory could put the 27-year-old closer to securing a historic third reign as IBF Light-Flyweight World Champion.

Nontshinga has already established himself as one of South Africa’s leading boxers, becoming the country’s youngest world champion and twice capturing the IBF Light-Flyweight world title.

His career has included major victories on foreign soil, including in Mexico, and a reputation for overcoming setbacks both inside and outside the ring.

Before the crash, Nontshinga had been preparing intensely for his return to competition following his last fight in November 2025.

He previously said he had maintained his training even without a confirmed bout, emphasising the discipline required to remain ready at world-championship level.

Further details about the crash are expected once confirmed by his management team.
