The Cape Winelands Airport is moving closer to becoming a major aviation and economic hub for the Western Cape, with billions of rand planned for its redevelopment.
The airport, located about 13km northeast of Durbanville, is being transformed from the former Fisantekraal Airfield into a commercial airport and wider aviation precinct. The project is expected to attract an initial investment of between R8 billion and R10 billion.
Plans include extending and realigning the runway, building a new boutique passenger terminal, expanding cargo facilities and adding hangars, aviation fuel infrastructure, hotels, warehousing and logistics facilities.
The development is also being positioned as more than an airport. Its wider precinct is expected to support tourism, business, logistics and job creation across the northern Cape Town region.
Cape Winelands Airport has received environmental authorisation, while the project has also secured Strategic Integrated Project status. Growthpoint Properties has taken an equity position and is involved in developing the wider precinct.
The first phase of construction is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026, subject to the remaining approvals, with commissioning targeted for 2028.
The airport is expected to provide additional capacity for Cape Town while serving as an alternate airport for international flights. Developers say its closer location could also reduce fuel requirements for some flights and support lower aviation emissions.
With plans for logistics, advanced aviation technology and commercial development around the airport, the project could become a major new economic hub for the Western Cape.
