A deadly shooting in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, has left two African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) members dead and five other people injured, including a 12-year-old child. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, 13 October 2026, as mourners were returning from a memorial service.
According to police reports, the shooting took place in Sophangisa Street, Nhlapo Section, Katlehong North. The group had attended a memorial service at Mogobeng Primary School for an ANC member who was shot and killed approximately two weeks earlier. As the procession continued along the street, a gunman allegedly opened fire on the group.
The two deceased victims, aged 21 and 23, were declared dead at the scene. Five others, aged between 12 and 27, sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. The attack has raised fresh concerns about violent crime and the safety of communities, particularly during public gatherings and memorial services.
Police confirmed that a suspect handed himself over and is in custody. The case has been referred to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team, with investigations continuing into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated, while the motive has not yet been established.
The ANC Youth League has condemned the shooting, expressing condolences to the bereaved families and wishing those injured a speedy recovery. The incident has also renewed calls for stronger action against political violence and gun-related crime in the area.
As the investigation continues, the Katlehong community is left mourning another tragic loss of life, with residents hoping that those responsible will be held accountable and that further violence can be prevented.
