The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of legendary British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for his unforgettable roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film franchise. Stewart passed away on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, aged 86.
His death was confirmed on Thursday, 29 October, through a statement shared on his official social media account. According to the statement, the celebrated actor passed away following a brief and difficult journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He was surrounded by his beloved wife, musician Sunny Ozell, and loved ones during his final moments.
Born on 13 July 1940 in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, Stewart grew up in a working-class family and experienced a challenging childhood. His interest in acting began at the age of 12 after a schoolteacher introduced him to Shakespeare, an experience that would eventually shape his future career. He went on to develop his craft through theatre, joining the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company in 1969.
Although he had already established himself as a respected stage performer, Stewart achieved international recognition in 1987 when he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. His portrayal of the intelligent and disciplined starship captain became one of the most celebrated performances in science-fiction television history. He played the character across seven seasons, several feature films and later returned in the television series Star Trek: Picard.
His success extended beyond science fiction when he took on the role of Professor Charles Xavier, the powerful mutant leader and founder of the X-Men, beginning with the 2000 film X-Men. His performance made him a central figure in the popular Marvel film franchise, appearing in several instalments alongside fellow actor Ian McKellen, who portrayed Magneto.
Beyond his major franchise roles, Stewart enjoyed an impressive career spanning more than six decades across television, film and theatre. His performances included Hamlet, Macbeth, Moby Dick and the comedy series Extras. His work earned him two Laurence Olivier Awards, a Grammy Award and numerous nominations, including Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony Award nominations.
In recognition of his contributions to drama, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, officially becoming Sir Patrick Stewart. In 2023, he also released his memoir, Making It So, reflecting on his childhood, personal struggles and extraordinary journey through the entertainment industry.
Stewart was married three times and had two children, Daniel and Sophie, with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. He married his third wife, American singer Sunny Ozell, in 2013. The couple remained together until his passing.
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from colleagues, fellow actors and entertainment organisations. Star Trek actor William Shatner remembered Stewart as a magnificent performer who brought intelligence, grace and humanity to his work. His longtime friend Ian McKellen also paid an emotional tribute, remembering his Yorkshire roots, honesty and warmth.
Hugh Jackman, who worked alongside Stewart in the X-Men films, described him as a great friend and mentor, while George Takei praised his portrayal of Captain Picard for inspiring generations with a hopeful vision of humanity. Marvel Studios also honoured the actor, recognising the lasting impact he made through his portrayal of Professor Xavier.
Remarkably, Stewart had already filmed a role in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December 2026, meaning audiences are expected to see one more appearance from the legendary performer.
Sir Patrick Stewart leaves behind a remarkable legacy that stretches far beyond his most recognisable characters. From the Shakespearean stage to the bridge of the USS Enterprise and the world of the X-Men, he became one of the most respected and recognisable actors of his generation.
His extraordinary voice, commanding performances and ability to bring depth and humanity to his characters will continue to be remembered by generations of fans around the world.
