Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement From International Football After 23 Years With Portugal

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year career representing his country.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, 5 November 2026, through an emotional social media message in which he said it was time to hand over Portugal’s famous number seven shirt to the next generation.

Ronaldo made his international debut in August 2003 and went on to make a record 234 appearances, scoring 146 goals for Portugal. Both achievements are records in men’s international football.

During his time with the national team, he captained Portugal to its historic 2016 UEFA European Championship victory and helped the country secure UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. He also made history by becoming the first player to score at six FIFA World Cup tournaments.

His retirement announcement follows a reported disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus during the September international break. Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, the Portuguese Football Federation has praised his contribution and promised to organise a tribute celebrating his achievements.

Ronaldo’s international retirement does not mean the end of his playing career. He is expected to continue representing Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.

His departure marks the end of an era for Portuguese football, leaving behind records, trophies and a legacy that has inspired millions of supporters around the world.
