An Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) branch treasurer has been stabbed to death near a voting station in Flora Park, Polokwane, Limpopo, in an incident that has shocked party members during South Africa’s 2026 local government elections.
The victim, identified as 31-year-old Lebogang Madiba, was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Thursday, 5 November, at a park opposite Flora Park Comprehensive School, where election counting was taking place.
According to police reports and witness accounts, an altercation broke out between two men. Madiba reportedly tried to intervene and calm the situation before he was stabbed in the neck. He was declared dead at the scene.
Police arrested a 35-year-old suspect in connection with the killing. He was expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 6 November, facing a murder charge.
Limpopo police have indicated that the incident was not election-related and that both men were reportedly members of the same political party. The motive remains under investigation.
The tragic death has left fellow party members and associates mourning Madiba, while raising concerns about violence and safety during an important period in the country’s democratic process.
