Severe Weather Warnings Issued Across South Africa As Heavy Storms, Hail And Flooding Threaten Communities

South Africans in several provinces have been warned to prepare for severe weather conditions on Friday, 6 November 2026, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible hail.

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms affecting Gauteng, northern KwaZulu-Natal and the south-western Highveld of Mpumalanga. A Yellow Level 2 warning also covers parts of the eastern Free State, North West, central KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.

According to SAWS, the expected storms could result in localised flooding, damage to infrastructure, falling trees and disruptions to roads and electricity services. Hail and excessive lightning may also pose risks to residents and motorists.

The warnings are particularly concerning for communities in low-lying areas, where heavy rainfall could cause water levels in streams and rivers to rise rapidly.

Authorities are urging residents to remain alert, avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges, and stay indoors during severe thunderstorms. Motorists are also advised to exercise caution when driving in wet and slippery conditions.

Extremely high fire danger conditions have additionally been forecast in parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, North West, Limpopo and Gauteng.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the South African Weather Service and follow instructions from local disaster management authorities as weather conditions develop.

The warnings serve as a reminder for communities to take necessary precautions to protect lives, property and infrastructure during periods of severe weather.
