Beijing Welcomes the World Humanoid Robot Games

The future of sports took center stage in Beijing on Thursday as the World Humanoid Robot Games officially kicked off, drawing competitors from across the globe.

Hosted by the Beijing municipal government along with several partner organizations, the event highlights China’s ambition to advance the field of humanoid robotics and position itself as a world leader in the technology.

Teams of robots, designed by companies and students from 16 countries including Japan, paraded proudly into the opening ceremony. A humanoid robot developed by a Beijing-based firm stood as spokesperson for its fellow competitors, declaring their mission: to “compete for the future, carry the will of humankind, and unleash the power of science and technology.”

Following the ceremony, spectators were treated to early demonstrations. At a soccer match, laughter rippled through the crowd as robots bumped into each other, tumbled dramatically onto the pitch, and had to be escorted away—offering both humor and a glimpse of just how complex humanoid movement can be.

The real action begins Friday, with over 500 robots set to participate in 26 events, ranging from athletics and martial arts to dance and performance showcases.

China has set its sights high, with government officials aiming to elevate the nation’s humanoid robotics sector to world-class standards by 2027. The World Humanoid Robot Games mark not just a competition, but a bold step toward that vision.
