Kaizer Chiefs have finally revealed the news on when fans can expect their exciting new signing, speedy winger Asanele Velebayi, to don the iconic gold and black jersey and light up the pitch. The wait, though, isn’t quite over yet.
Interim coach Ben Khalil Youssef revealed in a pre-match media briefing ahead of their clash with AmaZulu on Wednesday that the paperwork saga should be wrapped up in about two weeks.
“Velebayi, the paperwork for him will be ready, so I think after these two weeks,” Youssef confirmed, leaving fans eager but still on tenterhooks.
Cape Town Spurs have been fiercely contesting the winger’s transfer after their unfortunate drop to amateur status, making the deal a legal battleground.
Back in January 2024, Chiefs tried to snatch Velebayi, offering a cool R4 million plus two players. But Spurs weren’t having it, calling their young star a diamond worth much more. Fast forward to Spurs’ relegation, and Velebayi found himself technically a free agent—but Spurs claimed otherwise.
The Premier Soccer League’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) ruled in Chiefs’ favor, declaring the contract null and void since Spurs lost their professional status. Not one to back down, Spurs reportedly paid a R35,000 arbitration fee, appointing an arbitrator in a bid to overturn the ruling.
The talented 22-year-old winger from Phillipi, Cape Town, wasted no time. Right after the DRC cleared the way, he jetted off to OR Tambo International Airport, ready to make his dream debut with Amakhosi.
