In a series of gatherings that will take place across the country, ‘The Creative Lab’ has created a safe space for thespians in motion to equip themselves with the essential performance skills, industry knowledge, and confidence to excel in film, television, and theatre.
The one-day session will be facilitated by renowned actor Zolisa Xaluva and key industry players, Director and Bomb Productions co-founder Mandla N, Casting Director at Starquality Zinzi Zungu, Yoga instructor and Meditation Teacher Lulama Ntozini, and actress Sibulele Ntozini.
The participants will gain hands-on experience through interactive sessions (practically and theoretically) covering: Character development and emotional truth, Voice, movement, Script analysis and audition techniques, On-camera performance skills, improvisation, Professional branding, and career guidance, finances, and mental wellness, to name a few.
‘The Creative Lab’ is not limited to actors, but also writers, directors, producers, musicians, personalities, and all-round creatives, providing the practical tools needed to excel in the performing arts industry. As the pioneers of the world’s storytelling, politics, and change makers, being a prolific artist begins with working on oneself.
“I think it’s important to pay it forward to my fellow man. The industry has been kind to me for almost three decades now. I’ve gathered some valuable experience and expertise, the industry has regressed over time, and I think it’s in need of some resuscitation,” Xaluva says.
‘The Creative Lab’, Johannesburg Edition, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 28 October at Forking Good in Bryanston, Johannesburg, from 10 am until 16:00. Limited seats available to ticket holders.
Q&A WITH THE FACILITATORS:
Sibuele Ntlebi (Actress & MC)
What are the qualities that define a true thespian?
A true thespian is defined not just by talent but by a steadfast commitment to the craft. It’s someone who understands the importance of storytelling. Someone who can maintain honesty, discipline, and respect during the art of storytelling.
A true thespian understands that storytelling goes far beyond how “pretty” you look on television, far beyond fame and celebrity status. They know that acting is a God-given talent; it’s not about the individual, but more about the audience (the people). It is your purpose to utilise your talent to mirror society so that they can see themselves through you.
Zinzi Zungu (Actress, Director & Businesswoman)
What made you agree to participate in ‘The Creative Circle’?
I’m deeply passionate about spaces that create authentic dialogue and growth for performers. The Creative Circle represents exactly that — a community where creativity, curiosity, and craft come together. I believe in any initiative that pours into artists beyond performance, that equips them with knowledge, self-awareness, and the tools to sustain a career in this industry.
What are the qualities that define a true thespian?
A true thespian isn’t just someone who performs — it’s someone who lives the craft with integrity, curiosity, and discipline. They respect the process, embrace vulnerability, and tell stories that move audiences and spark thought. A true thespian doesn’t chase fame; they chase truth and excellence in their art.
What inspires you to continue ploughing into the film/TV industry, helping rising stars?
My biggest inspiration comes from witnessing transformation — seeing raw, untapped potential develop into confident, working artists. Every success story that began with a dream reminds me why mentorship and structure matter. Through Star Quality, we’ve seen that when artists are trained holistically — in both craft and business — they become unstoppable. That continuous cycle of impact is what keeps me going.
Lulama Ntozini (Transcendental Meditation Teacher)
What can creatives take from the work you do?
Creatives need clarity of mind, focus, energy, and innovative ways to express their craft. Transcendental Meditation stands as the most effective technique for unfolding full human potential (our innate ability and talent). For this reason, it seems proper to bring it to the discussion table as a tool for creatives to use to reach their full capacity.
Anything that can help you connect with your creative process will be an add-on in ensuring success. Meditation centers you – bringing clarity and balance. It reduces stress and anxiety, affording you most rest, taking you to a place of peace inside you. When anxiety and pressure are eliminated, our authentic self can be expressed. Meditation restores your energy and therefore liberates you to be innovative. You take your mind to a happy place inside, where peace and tranquility reside. This is where most creative impulses emerge – from the source of thought. This is the reservoir of our creativity, intelligence, and energy.
