South Africa’s adventure tourism sector generated R12 billion in direct revenue in 2024, supporting around 91,000 jobs as demand for outdoor experiences continues to grow.
One of the industry’s pioneers, Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, recently celebrated 45 years of operation, making it Southern Africa’s longest-established licensed hot air balloon airline.
Operating from the scenic Magalies River Valley and Mabula Private Game Reserve, the company offers sunrise balloon flights complete with a post-flight “Citation of Bravery” ceremony, creating a memorable experience for visitors.
According to the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA), the industry’s total economic contribution reached R25 billion in 2024 when indirect spending is included.
SATSA believes adventure tourism has significant growth potential, particularly in rural destinations such as the Wild Coast, Karoo, Drakensberg, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape, as the global adventure tourism market continues to expand.
