Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile has urged learners to attend school as normal despite freezing temperatures and wet weather expected across the province on Tuesday, 11 August.
The Gauteng Department of Education said some of the coldest conditions are expected in Johannesburg and surrounding areas, including Soweto, Roodepoort, Randburg and parts of the West Rand. Ekurhuleni and Tshwane are also expected to experience cold conditions, while Sedibeng and the Vaal may see cool to cold temperatures.
Rain, strong winds and widespread cloud cover could make conditions feel even colder.
Maile said the department was monitoring updates from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and urged parents and guardians to ensure that children are dressed appropriately before leaving home.
“Learners should wear school jerseys, jackets and other appropriate warm clothing to protect themselves against the cold.”
The MEC also called on schools to show reasonable consideration towards learners who may need additional warm clothing.
“Our priority is to keep learners safe, warm and in the classroom,” Maile said, stressing that cold weather alone should not unnecessarily disrupt teaching and learning.
Parents urged to prioritise safe travel
According to the department, learners who are healthy and able to travel safely should continue attending school unless authorities announce otherwise.
Maile urged parents and learners to exercise additional caution while travelling, particularly in areas experiencing rainfall, reduced visibility and slippery roads.
“Every school day and every hour of teaching and learning matters,” he said.
The department has also warned learners against lighting fires on school premises to keep warm.
Maile said open fires could result in burns, damage to school infrastructure and potentially serious incidents.
“Learners must never start fires in classrooms, toilets, corridors, school grounds or anywhere within school premises,” he said.
Principals, educators and School Governing Bodies have been urged to remain vigilant and ensure learners stay warm through safe measures.
The Gauteng Education Department said it will continue monitoring SAWS forecasts, warnings and advisories. Any further measures affecting schools will be communicated through official channels if necessary.
