The technology industry is moving quickly, with new AI models, massive data-centre investments, gaming hardware and major developments from some of the world’s biggest tech companies.
Here are five stories making headlines today.
1. Anthropic Unveils New Claude AI Models
Anthropic has announced two new Claude models, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, targeting coding and knowledge-based work.
The company says the latest models are designed to address some of the biggest concerns surrounding AI tools, including pricing, data retention and overly restrictive safety systems.
The launch comes as competition between leading AI companies continues to intensify.
2. AI Could Drive $32 Trillion In Data-Centre Spending
The global AI boom could trigger an extraordinary wave of investment in data-centre infrastructure.
PwC estimates that worldwide data-centre spending could reach approximately $31.6 trillion (R512 trillion) by 2050.
The United States is expected to attract almost half of that investment.
However, access to affordable and reliable electricity could become one of the biggest factors determining where new data centres are built, as AI systems require enormous amounts of computing power.
3. Razer Unveils Foldable Smartphone Gaming Controller
Razer has introduced the Prio, a compact gaming controller designed for smartphones.
The controller folds down for easier portability and supports smartphones measuring up to seven inches, including devices with cases.
It is designed to support mobile, cloud and remote gaming, with a recommended retail price of around $99 (approximately R1,600, excluding VAT and duties).
The launch comes as mobile gaming continues to expand beyond traditional touchscreen controls.
4. US Army Deploys High-Energy Laser Against Drones
The US Army has used a 20-kilowatt high-energy laser system to counter drones near the US-Mexico border.
The system, known as Locust, uses concentrated laser energy to disable aerial targets and can work alongside radar and command-and-control technology.
The deployment highlights the growing interest in directed-energy systems as governments look for new ways to deal with increasingly accessible drone technology.
5. Apple Prepares For A Major Launch
Apple is preparing for a major product announcement following the appointment of John Ternus as the company’s new CEO, succeeding Tim Cook.
Ternus reportedly told employees that Apple is preparing for a “huge launch” next week.
The company is expected to unveil its latest iPhone generation, while reports have also pointed to longer-term projects including a possible foldable iPhone, camera-equipped AirPods, smart glasses and a touchscreen Mac.
If the upcoming launch lives up to expectations, it could mark an important first test of Apple’s next chapter under Ternus.
