Search Intensifies For 24-Year-Old Cape Town Man Missing In Betty’s Bay Surf

An extensive search operation has been launched for a 24-year-old man from Observatory, Cape Town, who went missing while swimming at Silver Sands Beach in Betty’s Bay, near Kleinmond, on Saturday, 31 October 2026.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Kleinmond duty crew was activated at approximately 14:35 after receiving reports of a drowning in progress. The man reportedly disappeared in the surf zone while swimming, prompting an emergency response involving several rescue organisations.

NSRI Kleinmond launched two rescue craft, Spirit of Surfski and Michele, while rescue swimmers were dispatched to the scene. The South African Police Service (SAPS), Police Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), Western Cape Government Health EMS Metro rescue squad and an EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter also joined the operation.

During the initial search, an EMS Metro rescue diver and three NSRI rescue swimmers entered the water to conduct sweeping-line free-diving searches. Rescue teams also searched the surrounding coastline and used aerial support to cover a wider area.

Despite the extensive efforts by sea, air and along the shoreline, the missing man could not be located.

According to NSRI Kleinmond station commander Schalk Boonzaaier, police divers continued searching on Sunday, 1 November, with assistance from NSRI Kleinmond. NSRI communications manager Craig Lambinon also appealed to beachgoers and members of the local coastal community to remain alert and report any possible sightings or information to the police.

Police have opened an investigation into the incident, while the search operation remains ongoing. The NSRI has also expressed its thoughts and support to the missing man’s family and friends during this difficult time.

The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers associated with swimming in the ocean, particularly in surf zones where changing conditions and strong currents can put swimmers at risk. Beachgoers are encouraged to swim at designated beaches, follow lifeguard instructions and avoid entering the water when conditions are unsafe.
