British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a high-profile criminal trial at Southwark Crown Court in London on Thursday, 5 November 2026.
The 51-year-old entertainer was convicted following allegations brought forward by six women concerning incidents that reportedly took place between 1999 and 2009, during the height of his entertainment career.
The jury found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. However, he was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The judge indicated that Brand could face a significant prison sentence. He was refused bail following the verdict and is expected to return to court on 9 November 2026 for sentencing.
Details Of The Allegations
The trial heard evidence from six women who accused Brand of various forms of sexual misconduct.
One of the rape convictions involved a woman who attended Brand’s comedy performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2009. She told the court that she later visited his home, where an initially consensual encounter allegedly turned into a sexual assault. The jury found Brand guilty of rape.
The three sexual assault convictions involved women who worked for MTV, Choice FM and Channel 4. Their accounts included allegations of unwanted touching and inappropriate sexual behaviour during encounters in 2004, 2005 and 2009.
The women are legally entitled to lifelong anonymity under UK law.
Brand Denied The Charges
Throughout the proceedings, Brand denied all criminal allegations and maintained that he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.
While acknowledging his past promiscuous lifestyle and describing some of his behaviour as reckless, he insisted that his sexual encounters had been consensual.
The prosecution argued that Brand had used his celebrity status and influence to take advantage of women, particularly those working within the entertainment industry.
Investigation followed 2023 revelations
The case gained widespread attention in September 2023 after The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches published allegations from women accusing Brand of sexual misconduct.
The Metropolitan Police subsequently launched an investigation, which involved interviewing more than 100 witnesses, collecting over 400 witness statements and reviewing extensive historical material.
Following the investigation, prosecutors brought seven criminal charges against Brand, leading to the trial and eventual convictions.
Police have also confirmed that two further rape allegations involving two women remain under investigation. These are separate from the charges decided by the jury, and no finding of guilt has been made in relation to them.
From Entertainment Fame To Criminal Conviction
Brand became internationally recognised through his work as a comedian, television presenter and actor, appearing in Hollywood productions such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Arthur.
He later developed a significant online following through political commentary, spirituality and social issues.
However, the allegations published in 2023 significantly affected his public image and raised questions about celebrity influence and accountability within the entertainment industry.
What Happens Next?
Brand is scheduled to return to Southwark Crown Court on 9 November 2026 for sentencing. The judge is expected to determine the appropriate punishment for the four offences.
The case has attracted international attention, highlighting the importance of consent, accountability and the treatment of sexual offence allegations, regardless of an individual’s public profile.
For the women involved, the convictions mark a significant development after years of waiting for the allegations to be addressed through the criminal justice system.
