South African motorists can now get their hands on Ford’s flagship electric bakkie, the F-150 Lightning, thanks to specialist vehicle importer Rospa International.
The company has partnered with Autogroup International to convert the US-built vehicles to right-hand drive (RHD), making them fully road-legal in South Africa.
First launched in 2021, the F-150 Lightning quickly rose to become the world’s best-selling electric bakkie. While Tesla’s Cybertruck briefly overtook it, Ford reclaimed the top spot in early 2025.
Performance figures are impressive: dual motors deliver 433kW and 1,050Nm of torque, allowing the Lightning to sprint from 0–100km/h in just 4.8 seconds — outpacing the BYD Shark, currently the fastest EV bakkie officially sold in South Africa, which manages 321kW, 650Nm, and a 5.7-second sprint.
Rospa has only imported the extended-range models, equipped with 131kWh batteries and an EPA-tested driving range of 515km. The EPA cycle is seen as more realistic for South African driving conditions than Europe’s WLTP standard.
The F-150 Lightning also supports bidirectional charging with up to 9.6kW output — enough to power tools, camping gear, or even serve as a backup power source for homes.
Pricing and Variants
Rospa is offering two trims locally:
F-150 Lightning Lariat – R4.04 million
F-150 Lightning Platinum – R4.22 million
For perspective, those prices could buy four BYD Sharks or three Ford Ranger Raptors. In the US, the Lariat retails for about $79,090 (R1.39m), but after duties, taxes, shipping, and the RHD conversion, South African costs balloon to over R4 million.
Both models share the same drivetrain and battery, but differ in interior finishes and luxury features. The Platinum boasts Nirvana leather, wood trim, massage seats, and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Payload capacity is rated at 1,000kg for the Lariat and 900kg for the Platinum, while both variants can tow up to 4.5 tonnes with the Max Towing package — a serious figure by bakkie standards.
South Africa’s electric bakkie market remains limited. The only fully electric model officially available is the Maxus T90 EV (R1.1m), with Geely’s Riddara RD6 set to launch soon at around R1m.
Despite interest, EV bakkies face challenges: towing and heavy loads significantly reduce range. Popular tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything demonstrated that towing the F-150 Lightning’s maximum load cut efficiency to 1.6km/kWh, reducing range to roughly 210km.
While Ford South Africa does not homologate F-Series models and cannot provide official support, Rospa International offers its own 3-year/100,000km warranty. The importer has technicians in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg, and supplies genuine parts as part of its after-sales programme.
