In what could’ve been one of the juiciest transfer coups of the season, Kaizer Chiefs were reportedly this close to signing former Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro Neo Maema… but the deal slipped through their fingers faster than a slippery wet match ball.
After a forgettable 2024/25 campaign, the Glamour Boys were on a serious mission to beef up their squad. They did land some big names — but one got away, and it stings.
Chiefs Tried. Twice.
Sources say Chiefs were keen on Maema not once, but twice — first during the January transfer window, and then again in the off-season.
With Maema struggling for game time under Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Chiefs saw an opening and pounced. But Sundowns were having none of it.
“They [Chiefs] were definitely interested, but Sundowns decided it was best for him to move to a different league rather than sell to their rivals,” an insider told The Citizen.
Translation: “Over our dead bodies will you have him.”
Instead of handing a midfield gem to Naturena, Sundowns sent Maema off on a continental adventure — destination Tanzania, with Simba SC.
Simba Gets the Shine
Now 29, Maema has already featured in Simba SC’s last two league games, getting his boots dirty and settling into his new surroundings.
Sure, it’s not Soweto, but Maema seems to be adjusting just fine.
Meanwhile, Chiefs fans are left wondering what could’ve been. Maema’s creativity, composure, and flair would’ve added serious firepower to Amakhosi’s midfield engine. Instead, they’ll just have to admire him from afar… or maybe CAF Champions League highlights.
So Close, Yet So Far
Missed transfers are part of the game — but this one cuts deep. For now, Kaizer Chiefs will continue their rebuild without the one that got away.
As for Maema? He’s living the Simba life. And Chiefs? Well, they’ll be watching… maybe even a little jealous.
