South African producer and DJ Nathi MaQ is taking 3-Step in a bold new direction with the release of “Violin 3-Step,” an Afro House-inspired track that places cinematic violin melodies at the heart of the genre.
Born Nkosinathi Maqanda, the Krugersdorp-born artist, who was raised in Kagiso on Johannesburg’s West Rand, has built a reputation for blending township storytelling with contemporary electronic sounds. His latest release continues that creative evolution by introducing orchestral elements rarely heard in dance music.
Inspired by the acclaimed film August Rush, Nathi MaQ says the single reflects his lifelong love of orchestral music.
“I wanted to create something emotional while still making people move. Using the violin as the lead instrument in a 3-Step song isn’t something you hear every day,” he said.
The result is a fresh, cinematic take on 3-Step that combines emotive strings with infectious Afro House rhythms.
Away from the decks, Nathi MaQ is also an accomplished filmmaker, actor and fashion designer. A University of Johannesburg Law graduate and alumnus of the Duma Ndlovu Acting Academy, he writes, directs and produces many of his own visuals, including the music video for “Abangani.”
Following releases such as “Abangani,” “Ngiyahluleka,” and “Embo,” the artist continues to push creative boundaries while staying true to his South African roots.
