Two-time Grammy-nominated vocal ensemble Just 6 is bringing its distinctive Afro-vocal sound to Braamfontein this Saturday, 12 September.
The six-member group will headline Jazz at Jozi Gold at Jozi Gold Brewing Company, promising an intimate night of jazz, African rhythms, R&B and vocal experimentation.
What makes Just 6 stand out is simple: there is no band.
The group creates its entire sound using only their voices, recreating bass lines, percussion, harmonies and other instrumental elements through vocal arrangements.
The ensemble — Ntuthuko Malaza, Rashaka Mbevhana, Kwande Cakata, Mthandazo Hospas, Fezile Mavuso and Nkosie Hospas — has taken its Afro-Vocal Play style from humble beginnings to stages across Africa and Europe, earning two Grammy nominations along the way.
The Johannesburg show forms part of the growing Jazz at Jozi Gold series, which aims to bring live music back to Braamfontein and its intimate performance spaces.
With the city’s jazz calendar heating up ahead of the annual Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Just 6 offers a different kind of live experience: six voices, no instruments and one room.
