Police have yet to establish the nationality of a man arrested in connection with one of the nine women’s deaths being investigated across Ekurhuleni.
Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said investigators had received information suggesting that the suspect may not be South African, but his country of origin has not been confirmed.
A dedicated police team is investigating the deaths of nine women whose bodies have been discovered across the East Rand since July. One suspect remains in custody, while investigators are also following up on a separate person of interest.
Police have confirmed that some of the cases may be connected, although further forensic and investigative work is needed to establish the links.
Five of the nine victims have not yet been identified. The Department of Home Affairs has joined the investigation and is assisting police with biometric information, including fingerprint records, to help identify the women and develop possible leads.
Meanwhile, SAPS has warned the public against sharing AI-generated images falsely claiming to show additional victims. Police said fabricated images and videos could increase fear and interfere with ongoing investigations.
Authorities have increased police visibility and resources in Ekurhuleni as the investigation continues.
