Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) has officially reopened its expanded Terminal 2, marking a major step in its plan to strengthen its position as a leading global aviation hub.
The new 3.2 million-square-foot terminal features smart check-in kiosks, self-service bag drops and automated technology designed to let passengers complete check-in in as little as 45 seconds. It is expected to handle 8 million passengers in its first year, eventually increasing capacity to 30 million annually.
The expansion will raise the airport’s total annual passenger capacity to 100 million, up from 61 million travellers in 2025.

Despite the milestone, Hong Kong faces stiff competition from regional rivals such as Singapore Changi Airport, as well as rapidly expanding airports in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. However, recent disruptions to Middle East air travel have boosted passenger numbers, with Hong Kong recording nearly 20% year-on-year growth in March as some travellers shifted to Asian carriers.
