Microsoft has named Vukani Mngxati as the new CEO of Microsoft South Africa, effective October 1, 2025. With over 25 years of experience in enterprise modernisation and strategic innovation, Mngxati is poised to lead the company’s efforts in driving South Africa’s digital and AI transformation.

This appointment marks another significant step in Microsoft’s long-standing relationship with South Africa, where the tech giant has been a trusted partner for over three decades. Microsoft views Mngxati’s leadership as a key enabler for expanding its presence in the region, particularly in AI and digital technologies.

“His appointment builds on our more than 30 years of partnership and investment in South Africa,” Microsoft stated in an official announcement. “It underscores our commitment to helping both public and private sectors harness the power of AI to promote inclusive economic growth.”

In his new role, Mngxati will oversee Microsoft’s operations in South Africa, focusing on initiatives that align with the country’s digital transformation agenda. His efforts will include expanding cloud infrastructure, nurturing AI talent within local communities, and forging new partnerships that support South Africa’s national development goals.

Microsoft emphasized Mngxati’s extensive background in leadership roles, notably at Accenture, where he served as CEO and board chairman. His experience also includes founding and running an entrepreneurial venture earlier in his career. This diverse skill set, combining both technical expertise and business acumen, positions Mngxati to successfully guide Microsoft’s South African operations.

“Vukani brings a proven track record in digital transformation, skills development, and strategic innovation to this role,” Microsoft said, adding that he is particularly passionate about advancing initiatives in health, education, and employability. These areas align closely with Microsoft’s broader goal of empowering communities and driving inclusive growth.

Naim Yazbeck, President of Microsoft Middle East and Africa, expressed confidence in Mngxati’s leadership. “Vukani’s appointment reflects our deep investment in South Africa, and we’re excited to continue partnering with public and private sector customers, partners, and communities under his guidance,” Yazbeck said.

Mngxati, for his part, expressed pride in his new role, highlighting the opportunity to create sustainable impact through collaboration with Microsoft’s global partner ecosystem. “We’re not just driving competitiveness in South Africa; we’re enabling real, sustainable impact,” Mngxati said. “I look forward to working closely with Naim, our leadership team, and stakeholders to build a future that is inclusive, innovative, and digitally empowered.”

Lillian Barnard, the previous leader of Microsoft South Africa, has transitioned into a new role as Chief of Enterprise Partners for the Middle East and Africa. Her leadership was instrumental in overseeing Microsoft’s South African operations, and her new position will focus on strengthening relationships with enterprise clients across the region.

With Mngxati at the helm, Microsoft looks forward to deepening its impact in South Africa and driving the next phase of innovation in the country’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
