Japan’s New Robots Show How AI Is Learning To Work In The Physical World

Robots are moving beyond computer screens and into the physical world, with Japanese technology companies showcasing machines capable of handling objects and carrying out tasks normally performed by people.

At a technology demonstration in Tokyo, companies including THK, Nachi, HatsuMuv and ugo presented robotic systems designed to operate in environments built for humans.

One of THK’s prototypes demonstrated how a single remote operator can control articulated robotic arms to pick up bottles, bags and boxes. The machine also showed off more precise movements by hammering a nail into a piece of wood.

Meanwhile, ugo demonstrated its semi-humanoid ugo Nova, which used its two seven-axis arms to perform a drilling task under remote control.

The robot has additional joints in its head and waist, allowing it to navigate spaces designed for humans. Ugo is also developing the machine to collect real-world data that could eventually be used to train physical AI systems.

The demonstrations highlight a growing push to bring artificial intelligence into the physical world, where machines need to understand objects, movement and their surroundings rather than simply process information on a screen.

However, the technology is still developing. Many of the robots demonstrated in Tokyo continue to rely on human operators, showing that fully autonomous physical AI remains a work in progress.

As investment in AI-powered robotics grows in Japan, developers are now focused on giving machines greater independence while improving their ability to safely work alongside people.
