DStv is officially 30 years old! That’s three decades of bringing South Africans unforgettable shows, live sport, and stories that have become part of everyday life. It’s been quite the journey—from a handful of channels to being a major part of over 14 million homes across Africa.
It all started back in October 1986, when M-Net was broadcasting just a few hours a night. Then, on 6 October 1995, MultiChoice launched DStv—only the second digital satellite TV service in the world at the time, and the first outside the US. Not bad for a business that started out in a caravan in Randburg!

By 2005, DStv had a million subscribers. By 2010, that number had jumped to 2.4 million. Now, families from Johannesburg to Lagos to Nairobi are tuning in every day.
From the early days of Carte Blanche, KTV, and Egoli, to hits like Mzansi Magic, Big Brother, Shaka iLembe, and The River, DStv has been at the centre of the shows we talk about, laugh with, and cry over. There’s something for everyone—whether you’re all about drama, reality TV, sports, kids’ content, or a bit of everything.

DStv’s content has also gone global, picking up International Emmy nominations for four years in a row! We’re talking top-tier productions like Reyka, Two Sides, Die Brug, School Ties, Chasing the Sun 2, and Play Room Live—shows made right here, but loved everywhere.
Let’s not forget the sports. SuperSport (also turning 30 next year!) has captured some of the biggest moments in African sports history: Bafana Bafana’s legendary AFCON win in ‘96, the Springboks’ four Rugby World Cup victories, and Olympic golds from legends like Josia Thugwane, Penny Heyns, and Tatjana Smith.

From just 16 channels in 1995 to over 140 today, DStv has grown with its viewers. Whether you’re on Access (from R99/month), Premium (from R699), or streaming with DStv Stream, there’s a package for every budget and viewing style—binge-watchers, casual viewers, and live sports fanatics included.
DStv has also been a tech trendsetter—launching Africa’s first personal video recorder (PVR), going HD, adding BoxOffice, launching the DStv App and now DStv Stream for anytime-anywhere watching.
As Byron du Plessis, CEO of PayTV South Africa, puts it: “DStv’s story has always been tied to South Africa’s—from Open Time in the 90s and the ’95 Rugby World Cup, to today’s must-watch local dramas. We’ve always aimed to bring people together through content that matters.”
And the journey’s far from over. With the support of Groupe CANAL+, DStv is gearing up for even more local stories, more live sport, and more innovation to keep up with what you want to watch—and how you want to watch it.

To celebrate this big 3-0, DStv is lining up some exciting offers and promos through November and December. Keep your eyes peeled—you won’t want to miss them.
