Kwaito star L’vovo Derrango has shared the emotional story behind his recovery from a near-fatal stroke, revealing how the life-changing experience forced him to rebuild his life, rediscover his purpose and embrace a new chapter centred on hope and resilience.
Born Thokozani Ndlovu, the award-winning musician said his life changed in an instant when he collapsed shortly after taking to the stage during a performance. He was rushed to hospital and spent weeks in intensive care fighting for his life.
The stroke left him facing physical, emotional and financial challenges. Unable to perform or record music, L’vovo lost his independence and income while also dealing with the pain of losing relationships he once considered close.
“I suffered financially because I wasn’t working or receiving any bookings. I had to move back home,” he said. “My real friends would come, cook for me and take care of me. I received words of support, but I also lost many people.”
The musician explained that the recovery process was slow and demanding. He struggled to speak properly and could no longer project his voice, making it impossible to continue creating music during the early stages of his rehabilitation.
Despite the setbacks, he refused to give up.
“Healing and recovery begin in the mind,” L’vovo said. “Once you decide that you’re going to fight, your body follows.”
During his recovery, he deliberately stayed away from the public eye, saying he did not want to be defined by sympathy.
“I stopped socialising and refused to be seen in public because I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me,” he said. “I wanted people to see me when I was ready, not when I was at my weakest.”
Now back in the spotlight, L’vovo describes surviving the stroke as a miracle and believes he has been given a second chance at life.
“I am one of the few people who were blessed enough to wake up from the ICU and be able to tell my story,” he said. “I live differently now. I eat well, I rest, I take care of myself and I appreciate every day that God gives me.”
More than a return to music, L’vovo says his comeback is about inspiring others who may be facing illness, hardship or personal struggles. He hopes his story will remind people that even after life’s darkest moments, healing and new beginnings are still possible.
